The bodybuilding diet: understanding the basics

Bodybuilding DietsGood bodybuilding diets will determine how successful you will be in your bodybuilding program. Working out without proper nutrition will ultimately be fruitless. Legendary body building entrepreneur Joe Weider once said "the true secret to body building success is found in proper bodybuilding diets". What he meant was that those who over indulge and pack their bodies with fat ultimately do harm to themselves and any of the benefits of body building diminish, since the lean, ripped appearance becomes difficult to attain. So, if you eat a proper diet for body building consisting of low fat, high protein with ample carbs, you will achieve results. Now, while a body building diet will consume more calories than a ordinary diet, there are certain considerations that must also be understood as well.

Basic myths and truths about metabolism

Diet Reviews coming soonWhile it is a fact that a lot of calories consumed will be burned off whilst training, there will also be a metabolic calorie burning effect that will occur as well, so please keep in mind that it is not good to overdo it! The greater the mass a body builder is, the more that person will want to eat and this can have obvious consequences. However, it does not result in some weird strange side effect, it is simply a logical reaction the body will have to maintaining a considerable amount of muscle mass. Keep in mind also that muscle is significantly more dense than fat and this means that muscle will expect more calories to maintain its size.

This is the reason muscle bound individuals don’t pack on the fat when they raise their calorie intake – the muscles burn the calories by “eating” the excess calories. Take note, this is often completely misunderstood by body builders as a green light to eat whatever it is that they want to eat, whenever they want to eat it and in great quantities. It is a enormous myth of the body building diet crowd! That is, you can increase your calorie intake slightly…but if you increase it outrageously then you will begin to pack on a lot of fat on top of whatever muscle that you already have. The resultant build will make you look like someone who enjoys training, but who enjoys overeating much more! (Which is not the type of appearance to aspire to).

It may be dated, but the advice is still relevant

Remember, body builders don't have to starve themselves:

Here are three quick tips for a good body building diet:

  • Eat smaller and more frequent meals throughout the day instead of just a few larger ones.
  • Each meal should have 40% carbs, 40% protein and 20% good fats.
  • Cycle the calories to prevent your metabolism getting used to a certain caloric level.

So as you can see, there is a great deal of common sense related to the body building diet. Fundamentally, if you eat good quality food, you can get away with eating a lot provided you have some real muscle mass. But, once you fall into the trap of eating whatever you want, whenever you want it (and in significant amounts), that far outstrip’s what you really need, you will find yourself undermining your own progress and i'm sure that's the opposite of what your trying to achieve?
