Should I be great to jump higher?
This is the question most frequently asked by basketball players in grass. And the most common and perhaps the most incorrect answer given is "Yes". And I say that to waste.
Let's go by this logic. If you 6 feet high, then take up a book on the top shelf of a shelf of 7 feet will not be difficult. Yes, you may have to stretch your hand a few inches, but it certainly will not be taxed. But the important thing to note is that you do not jump you're just stretching. If you are 5 feet high, then you might jump to get to this book on the top shelf. Let's explore this further – I'm sure you've heard of LeBron James and Spud Webb?
LeBron James – 6'8''debout and 250 lbs, has a vertical of 41 inches.
Spud Webb – He was one of the best players in the NBA, standing only 5'7 ", yet he won the Slam Dunk Contest in 1986. He had an amazing 42 inch vertical!
So we have a 5'7 "player with a vertical longer than a player 6'8 "height, I think you get the picture now. You do not need height to jump higher.
Definition jumps 1: Vertical force needed to push you off the ground. Note, not height, but Force.
If we were to explore through these activities, we arrived the following conclusion: the high jump can be attributed to:
- 1. POWER
- 2. SPEED
- 3. TECHNICAL
Above all, it requires that all three provided a rounded athlete.
POWER: Focus on strength training, especially near the quads and calves. Squat hops, depth jumps, UPS thrust, deadlifts and reverse toe raises and such are examples. What we are trying to do here is to strengthen the shin muscles and hamstrings. Note – we are not strengthening the muscles that we normally associate with increasing our jump vertical as the calf muscle or quad muscles, but on the contrary, the muscles around them. This is because the muscles will not produce big jumps in their ability to max less than their opposite muscle is strong enough to cope.
It is very important to have a calendar dedicated to a few weeks only on strengthening muscle groups.
SPEED: A Focus on cardiovascular exercises here, specifically high-intensity cardio as sprints. Another good year is jumping rope. Not only does it give you a little cardio workout, but it uses some of the muscles needed for jumping.
When the muscles are stronger you they complement each other and with the combination of your speed again, you'll start to really feel the difference.
TECHNOLOGY: Now you need to focus specifically on the exercises that focus purely on the vertical – overs dynamic approach, split scissor jumps. Work on your footwork, striking the right balance between your power and speed.
Continue focusing on your power speed and technique until you reach your optimal vertical. Good luck.
