To lock or not to wedge that is the question
For years cyclists have been looking for ways to maximize their power on their bikes and reduce their risk of injury. Different ways they have tried includes changing the bike set up, improving their fitness and more extreme case of setting their feet on the pedals or cleats counter any abnormal biomechanics can cause pain or reduce performance.
These methods can be very effective, but there times when they are not. Take for example the timing of foot pedal, I try to correct a foot too flat in the shoe or cleat. Mindful that 60% of the biomechanical problems that exist in the feet of compensation for faulty biomechanics in the pelvis or hips, then you can see that is essential to ensure that the hips and pelvis are fully functional before the feet are addressed.
A "rotation" of the basin (which is where the pelvic bone gets stuck in an abnormal position) can go unnoticed for many years until the compensations starting to cause problems. Generally, a pool rotation is caused by the lifting or carrying unusual, performing a repetitive motion abnormally or perhaps to compensate for another biomechanical issue elsewhere in the body. During rotation of the pelvis, the piriformis muscle on the outside of the hip is in a spasm of protection. This spasm effectively prevents the joint from working properly and if other areas have to compensate. If the problem is taken early enough, treatment assistance. If the problem is left for more than six weeks, the muscle will change its composition and become fibrotic and be unable to function normally. In these cases treatment will help in the short term, but every time you start training again, the problem recurs.
The body can compensate in a variety of means for rotating the pelvis causes unequal leg length, causing a variety of problem areas potential.
Common examples are that the foot can flatten to shorten the length of the longer leg or the other foot may increase the height of its vault lengthen the shorter leg. Alternatively, the knee of the longer leg can bend more to shorten it, or the knee of the shorter leg can bend less to lengthen it. In addition, the spine can bend to allow side to reach the greatest leg shorter. These are just some of the many ways in which the body trying to make a difference in leg length. Also keep in mind that the problems are worse in cycling than many other sports you are in a fixed position determined by an external factor, unlike running when you are relatively free to compensate how you want. All these compensations but increase the load on the structures that do more work. Typically, they will lead to knee pain, back pain, hamstring or thigh pain and hip pain. In addition, they make it very difficult to fix your bike correctly, like how do you know whether to fix the seat / pedal relationship right leg longer or shorter leg?
To manage these issues, we must first return the abnormal muscle tone in the pelvis (the piriformis) to normal. In other words you have to do "anti-spasm" exercises for the muscles. Stretching or flexible work just not cutting it. You need to return the muscle to its normal function, not just stretching. Once the spasm is eradicated as much as possible, then you must perform exercises to stabilize the pelvis. In other words, exercises that allow your muscles to control your pool and the trunk without having to go into spasm. Part of this process is achieved by the basic stability so-called "exercises", but you need talk to your physio about plyometric exercises for pelvic muscles that you can do in the gym.
Once your pond in good condition, and if you continue to have problems with your troublesome body part, then you can get a qualified practitioner or a specialist to consider prescribing the corners.
If someone tells you that wedges in your shoes can help with your knee, back or hip pain, you should make sure they check your biomechanics basin first.
